Appliance Recall: Samsung Top-Loading Washing Machine

Recall Notice

Samsung recalled 34 top-loading washing machine models on November 4, 2016, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). They did so because of a potential impact injury hazard created by the top of the washing machine detaching from the chassis mid-washing cycle. More than 700 incident reports have been filed, with 9 resulting in various impact- and fall-related injuries.

Affected models

2.8 million units across 34 models of top-loading washing machines are involved in the recall. They were manufactured between 2011 and 2016, and sold at home appliance stores around the country. The list of affected models can be found on Samsung’s recall notice page.

Similar recalls

LG and Kenmore Elite brand top-loading washing machines were recalled in 2012 because of injury hazards related to the drum coming loose in the middle of unbalanced loads. In September of 2016, GE issued a recall of some of their top-loading washing machines because of a potential fire hazard.

Manufacturer Remedies

There are three remedy options available as a part of Samsung’s recall program.

Option no. 1 is a free in-home service repair, including an extension of the manufacturer’s warranty for one year after the washing machine is repaired. The warranty extension is good no matter the age of the unit.

Option no. 2 is a rebate that can be applied to the purchase of a new washing machine, regardless of brand. Rebate size depends on the age of the unit but includes reimbursement for installation and removal fees.

Option no. 3 is a possible refund for buyers who purchased their machines in the 30 days leading up to the recall from the retailer where they made the purchase.
