While we rely on our refrigerators and freezers to keep our food safe for consumption, occasionally manufacturing defects can lead to these appliances being recalled. Haier America, in particular, has struggled with recalls in recent years as they had to recall chest freezers in 2010 and 2013 due to the fact that they posed a fire hazard. Now Haier is once again faced with a major recall as their top-mounting refrigerators have been found to pose a fire hazard. The Recall
On October 25, 2018, Haier America announced a recall of about 137,000 of their 10.1 cubic foot top-mount refrigerators due to the fact that an electrical component in the refrigerator can short circuit, posing a fire hazard. At the time the recall was announced, Haier America had received three reports of smoke, fire, and property damage due to this electrical problem. Fortunately, no injuries have yet been reported as a result of this recall.
The Recalled Units
The recall affects Haier HA10TG31 SS, SB, and SW refrigerators. These refrigerators measure about five feet high by two feet wide and have the Haier logo on the refrigerator door. The model number of your refrigerator can be found on the back of the refrigerator’s rear panel. These units were sold at Lowes stores and other independent retailers nationwide from September 2014 through September 2018 for between $400 and $500.
