Fix a Leaky GE Refrigerator by Replacing a Cracked Drain Tube

The drain tube in your side-by-side GE refrigerator model GSS25LGMBB runs between the drain trough and the drain pan. Puddles found at the back of your refrigerator may indicate the drain tube is cracked. Replacing the tube is a fairly easy repair that should take as little as an hour to accomplish.

Appliance Repair Safety Tips

  • Before you start repairing your refrigerator, unplug it from the wall and turn off the water supply valves.
  • Protecting your hands and eyes is a must so please wear work gloves and safety glasses while fixing your appliance.
  • If the repair isn’t going as planned and you no longer feel safe finishing the project, please stop what you’re doing and contact a trusted appliance repair technician.

How to Replace the Drain Tube in Your GE Refrigerator

  1. In order to access the back of your refrigerator, with the help of a friend or family member, pull your refrigerator forward.
  2. Now head to the back of your appliance and use a 5/16th nut driver to unthread the screws securing the rear access panel to the refrigerator’s lower half. Then lift the panel off the appliance and place it somewhere safe.
  3. The drain tube is located near the evaporator. Once you spot it, use a pair of wire cutters to remove the zip tie that holds the tube to the foam covered copper line. Be very careful not to damage the copper lines inside your refrigerator.
  4. The drain tube is attached to a shaft, to disconnect the tube from the shaft simply pull down on the tube.
  5. Discard of the faulty tube and grab the new drain tube. To install the new tube, wet the hose connector and the drain shaft, and then slide the tube onto the shaft.
  6. Grab a new zip tie and wrap it around the drain tube and foam covered copper line.
  7. Finish up your repair by reattaching the rear access panel and pushing the appliance back into place.
