Haier Refrigerator Not Cooling? Common Causes and Solutions

A refrigerator that stops cooling is one of those problems that needs to be sorted fast. Food spoils within hours, and the longer the issue goes on, the more you risk losing. Haier refrigerators have a few common failure points that cause cooling problems, and most of them are diagnosable without specialist tools.

Here’s how to work through it.

Check the basics first

Before assuming something major has failed, run through the obvious stuff. It’s surprising how often the answer is something simple.

  • Make sure the fridge is plugged in and getting power. The interior light should come on when you open the door. If it doesn’t, check the outlet with another device.
  • Confirm the temperature settings. Haier fridges can be reset accidentally when you’re cleaning the controls or rearranging shelves. The fridge should be set between 37 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and the freezer at 0 degrees.
  • Check that the doors are sealing properly. A door that doesn’t fully close, or a worn seal that lets warm air in, will make the fridge run constantly without ever getting cold.
  • Look at the vents inside. The cold air vents at the back or top of the fridge interior need to be clear. Food packed too tightly against them blocks airflow, especially in the freezer where ice can build up around vents.

Dirty condenser coils

This is the most common cause of poor cooling in any refrigerator, and Haier is no exception. The condenser coils release heat from the refrigerant. When they’re coated in dust, pet hair, and kitchen grease, they can’t shed heat efficiently, and the fridge struggles to maintain temperature.

The coils are usually at the back of the fridge or underneath, behind a kick plate. Unplug the fridge before cleaning. Use a coil brush or vacuum attachment to clear off all the buildup. If you’ve never cleaned them, you’ll be amazed at how much comes off.

Plug the fridge back in and give it 24 hours to recover. If the coils were the problem, you’ll feel cooling improve within a few hours.

Clean coils every six months going forward, more often if you have pets.

Condenser fan not running

The condenser fan blows air across those coils to help dissipate heat. If the fan isn’t running, the coils overheat and cooling drops off, even if the coils themselves are clean.

The fan is usually near the compressor at the back or bottom of the fridge. With the fridge running, you should hear and feel air movement near it. If the fan is silent or only spinning intermittently, it needs replacement.

Sometimes the fan is just blocked by dust or a fallen piece of food packaging. Clear any debris first. If it still doesn’t run, the motor has likely failed.

Evaporator fan problems

The evaporator fan is inside the freezer and circulates cold air through both compartments. If it stops working, the freezer might still get cold from direct contact with the evaporator coils, but the fridge section will warm up because no cold air is moving into it.

A common sign of evaporator fan failure is a fridge that’s warm while the freezer still feels cold. You may also hear unusual squeaking or clicking from inside the freezer.

The fan is usually behind a panel at the back of the freezer. On some Haier models, ice buildup around the fan blade can stop it from spinning. Defrosting the freezer fully and checking for ice is worth doing before assuming the motor has failed.

Defrost system failure

Haier fridges use an automatic defrost system to prevent ice from building up on the evaporator coils. The system runs a heater for short periods to melt frost. If the defrost heater, timer, or thermostat fails, frost builds up until it blocks airflow completely.

Signs of a defrost system problem include:

  • Heavy frost or ice on the back wall of the freezer
  • The freezer staying cold but the fridge gradually warming up
  • Water pooling at the bottom of the freezer or leaking onto the floor

You can confirm the issue by manually defrosting the fridge. Unplug it, empty it, and leave the doors open with towels on the floor for 24 hours. If cooling returns to normal after the defrost, the defrost system is failing and one of the components needs to be replaced.

Compressor problems

The compressor is the heart of the cooling system. When it fails, the fridge stops cooling completely. You’ll usually hear it. A working compressor makes a low hum that runs in cycles. A failing compressor may click on and off rapidly, make loud knocking sounds, or be completely silent.

Compressor replacement is expensive and usually only worth it on newer or higher end fridges. For older Haier models, the cost of compressor replacement often approaches the cost of a new fridge. Get a second opinion before committing to the repair.

Refrigerant leak

If the sealed system has a refrigerant leak, the fridge will gradually lose cooling power. Early on, the freezer might stay cold while the fridge warms up. Later, neither compartment cools properly.

Refrigerant leaks need to be diagnosed and repaired by a certified technician. The repair involves finding the leak, sealing or replacing the leaking section, evacuating the system, and recharging it with new refrigerant. It’s not a DIY job.

When to call for help

Call a technician if:

  • The compressor is silent or making unusual sounds
  • You suspect a refrigerant leak
  • The defrost system has failed
  • You’ve cleaned the coils and checked the fans but cooling hasn’t returned
  • The fridge is still under warranty

Haier offers warranty support on most parts for 12 months and on the sealed system for up to 10 years on many models. Check your paperwork before paying out of pocket.

Final thoughts

Most cooling problems trace to dirty coils, a failed fan, or a defrost system issue. Work through those in order. If you’ve ruled them out, it’s time to call a technician to check the compressor and sealed system.
