Dishwasher Repair
If your dishwasher’s power cord is frayed or damaged, it’s a fire hazard. When you can see visible signs of damage or your machine won’t turn on, it’s time to replace the power cord. Order the replacement part 4317824 for Whirlpool dishwashers and follow these steps.
1. Unplug the dishwasher.
Every repair should start with you unplugging the appliance. This keeps you and the area safe. Because this repair involves replacing the power cord, it needs to be unplugged, anyway.
2. Access the wiring at the base of the machine.
Locate the locking pin at the base of the dishwasher. Rotate it to loosen the bottom access panel and set the panel aside. Then find the electrical box in the right corner. Remove the cover panel so you can see the wire connections.
3. Loosen the wires and remove the old power cord.
Before you start untwisting the wires, tie a thin string to the power cord’s plug. When you remove the cord, this string will thread through the path so you can tie it to the new cord and pull it up through the machine later.
Go back to the origin. First, remove the screw holding the grounding wire in place. Then remove the two wire nuts and separate the machine’s wiring from the cord’s wires. The power cord’s wires are held in place by a circular nut, Loosen this part so you can set it aside. Then reach behind the electrical box plate and pull the wires through the back. Then pull out and set aside the whole power cord.
4. Install the power cord.
Loosen the string and tie it around the plug of the new part. Then start with the wiring. Pull approximately four inches of the three wires through the circular base and then tighten the nut to hold it in place. Resecure the base to the electrical box panel.
Connect the ground wire to the metal bracket. Because every assembly is slightly different, make sure you also read through the instructions that came with the part. Then use the new wire nuts to connect the white to the gray and the black to the black.
Then use the string to pull the power cord through the machine.
5. Reassemble the bottom panel.
Place the electrical box cover over the plate and tighten it with a screw. Then put the bottom access panel back into position and tighten the locking pin. Plug in the machine and make sure it turns on.
