Literacy is something that many of us take for granted, but it can be a major obstacle for children and adults who struggle to read and write. That’s why we’re so excited about these 3 amazing organizations that promote literacy in Cincinnati. Here’s some more information in case you know someone who needs their help or you want to get more involved.

Blue Manatee Literacy Project:

Were you sad when the founders of this popular children’s bookstore in Oakley announced that they were stepping down last year? Well, now you can celebrate because two longtime customers had the brilliant idea to turn it into a nonprofit to address reading disparities in Cincinnati. For every book you buy in the store or online, Blue Manatee donates a book to a child in need. They also work closely with schools and other literacy organizations to select the most beneficial books, provide mentors, and reach neighborhoods with the greatest need.

The Literacy Network:

This tristate coalition brings together more than 100 provider agencies and 40 schools to deliver a wide variety of programs for children and adults. That includes Children and Adult Basic Reading programs, tutor training, and Little Free Library book exchanges in local neighborhoods. It’s a big job because 15 to 20% of our population lacks basic reading skills, according to Literacy Network estimates.

Reading and Literacy Discovery Center:

For clinical services and literacy programs, visit the Reading and Literacy Discovery Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Their mission is to improve literacy and reading skills in children. They provide research and education for parents and teachers, as well as services for children. We’re grateful to all the people and organizations that make Cincinnati a great place to live.
